Satomi Kawai Design

After moving to the United States eight years ago, I encountered visual art in the form of Metalsmithing. Through this outlet, I have been demonstrating my existence. Because of my experience in the new culture, I became ambitious in speaking out through visual language. The longer I have lived in the United States, the more I explore my deeply embedded cultural and psychological associations. I started creating objects and adornments to express myself and to further understand their associations. For this goal, I broke conventional artistic rules by finding a new meaning and a new life in unusual materials. I have been finding unexpected possibilities of life forms within my own methodology.

My personal style exhibits two extremes, whether it is in the combination of materials, juxtaposition of components, or integration of ideas. My trial to build significance out of unexpected possibilities came from a personal compulsion rooted in my bi-cultural background. Now, I do not just see myself in the context of the US or Japan, but as a part of something larger.
